When is pregnancy considered “overdue”?

Usually a pregnancy is completed in 38 - 42 weeks.  About 5% of pregnancies are post-term or prolonged pregnancies.  That means lasting beyond 42 weeks.

What is “labor induction”?

If labor hasn’t started on its own, your doctor may use medicines to make your labor start so you can deliver your baby vaginally.

Why would my doctor recommend labor induction?

·          If you are two or more weeks past your due date.

·          Your baby may get too big for you to deliver vaginally if you are two or more weeks past your due date.

·          Your baby may not be getting enough food from inside your body.

·          Your water breaks before you go into labor.

·          You have high blood pressure.

·          You have a serious infection.

·          You have diabetes.
